Pearls of the Mediterranean
Portorož & Piran are the centre of an incredible part of the Mediterranean on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. Portorož (Italian: Portorose, literally "Port of Roses") is an Adriatic-Mediterranean coastal settlement in the Municipality of Piran in southwestern Slovenia Its modern development began in the late 19th century, with the vogue for the first health resorts. In the early 20th cntury Portoroć became one of the grandest seaside resorts in Europe, along with Abazzia, Lido and Grado, then as part of the Austrian Littoral. It is now one of Slovenia's major tourist areas, a city with a holiday atmosphere, lies in a leeward bay and has a very pleasant climate due to its proximity to the sea. The neighbouring, ancient city of Piran is one of the most beautiful Mediterranean cities and one of the best preserved historic cities in Europe.
The whole area is a string of natural attractions and cultural sights, all lined up along only a few kilometres.
This small piece of Istria awaits you with countless experiences.
Tales made of white crystals of Piran salt
Historic houses, squares and the narrow streets of Piran owe their charm mostly to the salt that was harvested in the once numerous salt pans near the town.
It played an important role and was the main source of wealth throughout the rich history of Piran.
A small part of the Strunjan salt pans are preserved to this day and the salt pans at Sečovlje Salina are one of the few in the world where salt is still harvested in the traditional manner, which lends it a special quality.
The views of the picturesque salt pans is magnificent. You can also experience and visit the salt pans and attend the festival of salt. Even today, the fine quality of the salt harvested in Piran has a reputation that is known world-wide. Do not be surprised if you see it on the shelves of a high-end shop in any of the larger European towns.
The presence of nature and people
The sea, the rich natural resources, traditional enterprises such as salt production, fishing and growing olives have shaped the character of the landscape and the local people. Here, in the heart of Europe, we may seem distant at first, but soon afterwards you will discover how warm and friendly we really are.
Portorož & Piran are situated between two nature parks. Treasures of the local natural and cultural heritage are guarded by the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park and Strunjan Nature Park. Up on the high hills of the hinterland, there are several picturesque villages that are known for their premium olive oil and excellent vegetables and fruit. It is no wonder that even the most demanding gourmets enjoy the local cuisine.
Meeting point of the Slavic and Roman worlds
Here, distance was replaced by nearness: nearness of the sea, the people, cultures and countries. Due to the exceptional position and diverse landscape, everything really is nearby.
Taste the colours of life and customs at the meeting point of the Slavic and Roman worlds.
The official languages in our area are Slovene and Italian.
Listen to the locals and you will notice the melodious sounds of the Slovenian language combined with the Venetian dialect and influenced by neighbouring Croatia.
A place of incredible views
The exceptional geographical position, flysch cliffs and high hills that descend to the sea create incredible views that can be enjoyed from numerous vantage points. When the weather is clear, you can see the outline of the Venetian lagoon in the west. A bit to the north, above the Gulf of Trieste, you can see the snowy peaks of the Alps.
