Gifted Intensity, Perfectionism & Stress
WorkshopPracticeEnglishPresenter(s): Miona Majstorovic LemaîtreAlthough perfectionism tendencies can happen to everybody, it has been proven by research that the gifted, due to their complex inner functionning and atypical development, are, more than the others, prone to it.
This workshop provides an overview of two important endogenous (innate) characteristics, of the gifted: perfectionism and intensity. If left unchecked, these two can make a lot of harm to the development of the gifted. Many gifted students set high standards for themselves and it is important to make a difference between search for excellence and perfectionism. So, it is necessary to carefully instruct about the difference the gifted themselves and those who teach and take care of them.
Attending this workshop will: Establish the importance of social-emotional competencies of educators for productive and skillful teaching; Increase the self-efficacy of teachers towards their professional task in detecting excessive perfectionism and intensity in gifted children and helping them overcome the challenges; Introduce teachers to a set of strategies that will help them deal in real situations with negative expressions of perfectionism and intensity of this student population.
Specific strategies will be shared to gear children towards a healthy pursuit of excellence.
This workshop will enable you to define, discuss, and demonstrate how characteristics and mindset about their own abilities influence perfectionism in gifted children, and how to as a practitioner, parent, or teacher nurture a love for learning vs fear of failure, how to make subside perfectionist beliefs that can cause stress, impact a child ‘s goals, achievement outcomes, and behaviours (procrastination, self-handicapping, avoidance coping, and even underachievement can be result of excessive perfectionism).
