Making safe and supportive learning environment for gifted studentsPaper
Presentation will be in Slovene language.
Gifted students often face a variety of social and emotional challenges at school. Socializing with peers with similar interests and intellectual abilities can alleviate some of these challenges. At Primary school Pod goro, we prepare a variety of activities that enable talented students to socialize and we create an environment where these students can connect and collaborate based on common interests and experiences. A safe and supportive learning environment fosters a sense of belonging and reduces the isolation that some gifted students may feel in regular classes.
The article highlights the benefits of bringing gifted students together for their education and presents specific activities that take place outside of or in parallel with classes. Weekend school has proven to be a very successful form of education for gifted students, but careful planning is very important as well as a balance between offering intellectually stimulating content and meeting social-emotional needs of students.
Unlike traditional teaching in a classroom, which has a harder time keeping up with the learning pace of gifted students, and consequently leads to boredom or a decline in motivation, grouping gifted students allows for a much more personalized way of learning. In a gifted-centered environment, teachers offer teaching methods and content that best meet students' needs for accelerated learning.
